Вихри снежные крутя;
The storm covers the sky with darkness,
Twisting snowy whirlwinds;
Now, like a beast, it starts to howl,
Now it cries like a child,
Now on the dilapidated roof
It suddenly rustles the straw,
Now, like a belated traveler,
It knocks at our little window.
Storm with mist the sky is shrouding,
Whirling snow in wild array;
Like a beast it's howling, howling,
Now it weeps as children may,
Now on our old roof, decaying,
Sudden rustling straw resounds,
Now, like traveler late and straying,
At our window knocks and pounds.
La tormenta cubre el cielo de bruma,
girando torbellinos de nieve;
ora, como una fiera, aúlla,
ora llora como un niño,
ora sobre el tejado ruinoso
de pronto hace susurrar la paja,
ora, como un viajero rezagado,
llama a nuestra ventanita.
La tormenta el cielo cubre,
nieve gira sin control,
como fiera ruge, sufre,
ya cual niño en su dolor,
ya en el techo carcomido
cruje la paja feroz,
ya, cual viajero perdido,
toca el cristal con su voz.
Our decrepit little hut
Is both mournful and dark.
Why, my dear old woman,
Have you fallen silent by the window?
Is it the howling of the storm
That has tired you, my friend,
Or are you dozing to the humming
Of your spindle?
Our old hut is worn and leaning,
Full of sorrow, full of dark.
Why, old dear, are you not speaking,
By the window, silent, stark?
Is the storm with all its howling
Wearing you, my friend, so low,
Or you doze to whirring, rolling
Of your spindle, soft and slow?
Nuestra vieja chocita
es triste y oscura.
¿Qué te pasa, mi viejecita,
que callas junto a la ventana?
¿Acaso el aullido de la tormenta
te ha cansado, amiga mía,
o dormitas con el zumbido
de tu huso?
Nuestra choza, tan viejita,
es sombría y sin calor.
¿Qué te pasa, viejecita,
que callas junto al balcón?
¿O del viento los aullidos
te han cansado, mi amor,
o dormitas con los giros
de tu huso alrededor?
Тихо за морем жила;
Let us drink, good friend
Of my poor youth,
Let us drink from grief; where is the mug?
The heart will be merrier.
Sing me the song of how the titmouse
Lived quietly beyond the sea;
Sing me the song of how the maiden
Went for water in the morning.
Let us drink, my kind old comrade
Of my poor and youthful days,
Drink from grief — where is the tankard?
Hearts grow merry as we raise.
Sing how once a little swallow
Lived in peace beyond the sea;
Sing how once a maid would follow
To the well at dawn, carefree.
Bebamos, buena amiga
de mi pobre juventud,
bebamos de pena; ¿dónde está la jarra?
El corazón estará más alegre.
Cántame cómo el herrerillo
vivía tranquilo allende el mar;
cántame cómo la doncella
iba por agua de mañana.
Bebe, amiga bondadosa
de mi pobre juventud,
ahoga penas: ¿y la copa?
alegrará la inquietud.
Canta cómo un pajarito
tras el mar vivía en paz;
canta cómo una chiquita
fue por agua al despertar.
Вихри снежные крутя;
